Across Guatemala, each Maya town has its own unique traje (traditional dress) which distinguishes it from another. Weaving is a century-old Maya art which remains a fundamental part of Maya identity today. Since then, our cooperative has provided a sense of purpose and empowerment and enabled the possibility of a brighter future. This lead to the birth of Trama Textiles. As a result, the women across our communities united and decided to use their skills as weavers to support themselves and their families. During this period, many Maya men were lost: grandfathers, fathers, brothers and sons. Our cooperative was formed in 1988 after some of the most devastating years of the Guatemalan civil war. ![]() We also collaborate with various individual weavers and artisans across the country who play a crucial role in Trama’s success. We work directly with 100 women from 17 weaving communities across 5 regions in the Western Highlands Sololá, Huehuetenango, Sacatepéquez, Quetzaltenango and Quiché. (By comparison, this loom currently sells for $299 new, and the stand is another $145).įree local pick-up in Austin, Texas. The Polish craftsmanship is lovely, and when in use, the loom makes a wonderful conversation piece. I’m only selling it in order to make room for other things. It works perfectly and is in like-new condition. When not in use, it folds down, with the weaving intact, making it great for anyone who wants to take their weaving with them on a trip or picnic. The loom has a 24” weaving width, producing fabric wide enough for a variety of uses: pillow covers, runners, even clothing and blankets. It was my first loom, and I learned all the basics of weaving with it. This loom is excellent for both beginning and experienced weavers. Maybe.įor sale: 24” Kromski Harp rigid heddle loom with stand and accessories These looms are in Erie PA and would prefer cash on pick up. I was thinking perhaps someone who wanted to add a harness frame to their already owned Dorothy might be able to use this loom, or someone who doesn’t mind putting in a little elbow grease might think this was just the ticket! ![]() I do not think this loom saw nearly as much use as the Jana as the wood is less much dinged( pretty nice!) and the screws all have the square heads (original). The silver metal parts need a rubb down with some steel wool). Jana is a girl with character!ĭorothy: 15 3/4” weaving width, 4 shafts, this girl needs a bath in some Evaporust and her life would be greatly improved! I’m not sure the heddles can be saved and I really do not know about the reed (which I think is 12 dent), but might make the effort there. Jana: 20” weaving width (love that!), nice big levers, crank handle (assuming original), 10 dent stainless steel reed (woot! Woot!), texsolv heddles, nicely blackened (oiled maybe to prevent rust?) Heddle bars and harnesses, lovely wooden beater that lifts off for threading, castle put on backwards (why? So that levers would be on the right?), 4 shaft, screws do not all have the square top so not all original, someone’s initials marked in pen in 2 places, lots of dings (love) in the wood, needs new foam under the harnesses. ![]() In truth I am a little bit smitten with the Jana! Both looms are functional but each has issues which I will try to describe. More cleaning out of the second and third floors of the store where I work! I am listing these looms priced as if you might want them for parts or repair. ![]()
